Two Leading Cardiology Groups Join Franciscan Health System

Two preeminent cardiology groups have joined the Franciscan Health System, giving the organization the largest array of cardiologists in the South Sound and expanding its expertise in screening, diagnosing and treating heart-related conditions.

Cardiovascular Consultants, which has offices in Auburn and Federal Way, and Cardiac Health Specialists, with offices in Tacoma, Lakewood and Gig Harbor, joined Franciscan effective July 1, 2011.

Together, the medical practices include 13 cardiologists. When added to the four cardiologists employed by Franciscan Cardiology Associates, this gives the Franciscan Health System 17 in all.

"With these two groups and our current cardiology practice, we are honored to now have the South Sound’s largest and most comprehensive array of expert cardiologists on our team," said Franciscan Chief Operating Officer Cliff Robertson, MD.

Cardiovascular Consultants, established in 1978, has a clinic on the campus of Franciscan’s St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way and a clinic in Auburn. Cardiac Health Specialists, which has served the community since 1999, has offices at Franciscan’s St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood and St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor.

Both medical practices have a long history of collaborating with cardiac surgeons and other experts within the Franciscan Health System. Each will maintain their current clinics where patients are treated for coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, heart rhythm disorder and other conditions.

With the addition of Cardiovascular Consultants and Cardiac Health Specialists, Franciscan has established a joint operating committee that includes representatives from each practice that co-manage all aspects of cardiology-related services for the health system. The new management model spans hospital care, outpatient services, clinical outcomes, strategic planning, financial performance, marketing and administration.

"We look forward to the opportunities this presents Franciscan to advance cardiac care throughout our system and for the communities we serve," Dr. Robertson said. "This is an innovative new way to operate a service line and it will be considered for other services in the future."

Franciscan’s St. Joseph Heart and Vascular Center in Tacoma is the region’s leading provider of cardiovascular care. A dedicated team of experts at St. Joseph provides open-heart surgery, cardiac rehabilitation services, an outpatient program for patients diagnosed with heart failure, and other services.

"More people in the South Sound turn to the world-class St. Joseph Heart and Vascular Center for cardiovascular care than to any other hospital in the area," Dr. Robertson said. "We are proud to be the leader in high-quality, life-saving cardiac services. And we are excited to expand our services with the addition of Cardiovascular Consultants and Cardiac Health Specialists."
