Franciscan Youth Violence Prevention Initiative Receives Grants; Funds New Westway Neighborhood Soccer FieldGrand opening with free soccer clinic on April 6, 2013
Federal Way, WA -- Youth in the Westway neighborhood of Federal Way have a new, safe place to play. The Franciscan Health System, as part of its Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, sought and received enough grant funding to turn an unused field behind the Westway Community Center into a soccer field. A grand opening celebration for the community will be held on Saturday, April 6, at the Westway Community Center, located at 33400 21st Ave SW in Federal Way. A ribbon cutting will be held at 1 p.m. and a soccer clinic for neighborhood youth run by the Federal Way Boys & Girls Club will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Franciscan is partnering with the Federal Way Boys & Girls Club to offer a free spring soccer league on the field for neighborhood youth in grades K-3. Grant funding for the field came from the Seattle Foundation, D.V. and Ida McEachern Charitable Trust, Catholic Health Initiatives and the Franciscan Foundation. The Youth Violence Prevention Initiative is funded with a grant from Catholic Health Initiatives. Connecting youth to safe places to play and caring adults are two key components to helping youth be safe and successful. The creation of the Westway soccer field and the continued use of it by the Westway neighborhood and community partners will provide opportunities for youth to be involved in positive activities for years to come.
