Franciscan Seeks Nominees For Patient Family Advisory Councils

Franciscan Health System is recruiting former patients and their family members to serve on its volunteer Patient Family Advisory Councils. Council members collaborate with Franciscan staff at all levels to identify ways to improve the patient experience in Franciscan’s hospitals, outpatient centers, and medical clinics.

Members share their personal experiences with hospital and clinic leaders and other staff members, while also offering constructive feedback about a variety of system-wide and regional process improvement initiatives.

"The councils provide an ongoing and fresh perspective of what it’s like to be a patient in our care," said Chief Nursing Officer Laurie Brown, RN. "Looking at the care we provide – through our patients’ eyes – helps us see our processes and behaviors in a new light, and fosters creative solutions that may not have occurred to us without their help."

Community member Annie Morningstar said serving on the Patient Family Advisory Council was "one of the most rewarding things I’ve done."

"The council is a powerful vehicle for the patient voice to be heard," she added. "It’s validating to know somebody cares enough to seek their feedback."

Advisory council members meet monthly over dinner, November through June, and serve a maximum two-year term. Franciscan is seeking volunteers who have used its inpatient and outpatient services within the past three years, or their family members. Inpatient means the individual was admitted to a Franciscan hospital for care and assigned a bed. Outpatient refers to services that do not involve an overnight stay in a hospital, such as a visit to a Franciscan Medical Group clinic, undergoing a mammogram or same day surgery.

Adults of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Nominations will close Oct. 5, 2012 or when all council positions are filled. Each Patient Family Advisory Council consists of 12-15 community representatives and an equal number of Franciscan staff representatives.
