Franciscan Chief Nurse Officer Receives UW-Tacoma Nursing Alumni Award

Laurie Brown, the chief nurse officer for the Franciscan Health System, received the 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Washington-Tacoma School of Nursing during a special ceremony earlier this month.

She earned a master’s degree in nursing from the school in 2001. Since 2005, she has served as clinical faculty for the school’s Nursing and Healthcare Leadership program and is a frequent guest lecturer.

"I am honored to have been chosen for this award," Brown said. "Being a nurse is both a vocation and a calling for me. I am blessed to have the chance to work with the great nursing staff at Franciscan and to mentor students at the UW-Tacoma campus as part of their education."

Brown was appointed chief nurse officer (CNO) of the Tacoma-based Franciscan Health System in July 2008. She has held several leadership positions during 27 years of employment with the non-profit organization, including interim president of St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor. As the CNO, she provides strategic direction for the practice of nursing at the five-hospital health system.

She brought The DAISY Award program to Franciscan hospitals to recognize nurses for their exceptional clinical skills and the extraordinary compassion they show patients and their families. "Every day, patients trust us with their health and their lives," Brown said. "Nurses are present when patients need support, a caring touch, and information they can use to heal and recover."

The University of Washington-Tacoma School of Nursing established the Outstanding Alumni Award to honor graduates who have had an inspirational impact on students and the community, and made significant contributions to their profession and community service.

"The university’s School of Nursing is a wonderful resource for the South Puget Sound region," Brown said. "I was able to continue working full time while attending graduate school in my community. Many of our nurses at Franciscan have benefitted personally and professionally from this opportunity that allows them to work and further their education at the same time."

In addition to St. Anthony Hospital, the Franciscan Health System includes St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma; St. Clare Hospital, Lakewood; St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way; and St. Elizabeth Hospital, Enumclaw.
