Franciscan Cancer Center Earns Re-Accreditation With Commendation

Franciscan Cancer Center has earned a three year re-accreditation with commendation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Franciscan is the only accredited integrated network in Washington State and one of only 37 cancer centers in the country who have earned this accreditation. (Other Washington State based organizations are certified as Community Cancer Programs.) Of the 1500 programs that apply for re-accreditation, only 49% succeed.

A CoC accreditation assures that our team follows the highest standards for quality cancer care and tracks outcomes in patient care and survival, compared to other cancer programs locally and throughout the United States.

The commendations Franciscan earned were in the areas of:

  • Outcomes analysis,
  • Prevention and detection,
  • Cancer education for cancer registry staff,
  • Cancer related quality improvements

Accreditation Background Information

Franciscan Cancer Care is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). This accreditation assures that our team follows the highest standards for quality cancer care and tracks outcomes in patient care and survival, compared to other cancer programs locally and throughout the United States.

The Commission on Cancer is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and monitoring comprehensive quality care. Only 25 percent of cancer programs in the United States carry this quality designation and we are proud to be a part of this quality-focused few.

The CoC evaluates and compares providers with broad-based and comprehensive cancer programs, nationwide, that offer the entire spectrum of cancer control activities from prevention to rehabilitation and long term follow-up. The overall rating is derived from an assessment of an organization’s rate of compliance with multiple rigorous standards and indicates how well each organization measures up to all accredited programs.

The five essential elements of a Commission on Cancer-accredited program are:

  • State of the art clinical services providing pre-treatment evaluation (like tumor boards and care conferences), staging, treatment and clinical follow-up for patients with cancer. This care extends from initial screening and diagnosis through treatment and into end-of-life care as needed.
  • A Cancer Committee leads the program direction through goal setting, monitoring the program activities, and evaluating patient outcomes and improving care.
  • Cancer conferences or tumor boards provide a forum for patient consultation and contribute to physician education.
  • The Quality Improvement Program is the mechanism for evaluating and improving patient outcomes.
  • The cancer registry and database are the basis for monitoring the quality of cancer care.
