Hospice – a special kind of care

Franciscan Hospice House is home to the only dedicated inpatient hospice program in the south Puget Sound region, and provides home-like comforts, 24-hour nursing care and peace of mind for individuals with a terminal illness.

Located in University Place near Tacoma, our facility is a unique and caring home designed for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less.

Distinguishing features of Franciscan Hospice House include:

• 20 patient rooms, 15 of which are private rooms for individual patients and five of which are one-bedroom suites for patients and overnight family/friends
• hide-a-beds in all rooms, enabling relatives and loved ones to stay overnight
• 24-hour nursing care and daily visits by a physician certified in hospice care and palliative medicine
• comfort therapies (massage therapy, music therapy, art therapy, aromatherapy) to enhance the patient’s quality of life
• a chapel for meditation or prayer by people of all faiths
• a multipurpose room for support groups and memorial services
• garden areas with walkways and a meditative setting for patients and their loved ones

Franciscan Hospice House takes a unique approach to hospice care by:

• assisting hospice patients who require a higher level of medical service than can be provided at home by the family and/or friends
• allowing family and patient to transition between care venues, such as between hospital and home
• Allowing family members to enjoy extended stays with their loved ones and encouraging them to participate in patient care by helping prepare some meals and doing laundry on-site

Since 1989, Franciscan Health System has provided home-based hospice services in which nurses and other caregivers visit the homes of terminally ill patients. Franciscan is the largest provider of home-based hospice services in the South Puget Sound region.
