What is the next step in the negotiations?
We are interested in meeting soon and are hopeful that a good-faith effort to reach agreement will soon lead to a new contract with fair and competitive pay and benefits.

How does your pay and benefit offer to these employees compare to the pay and benefits that nurses receive?
All St. Joseph Medical Center employees, including service workers, technical workers, nurses and management, are offered the same health insurance plans. These same plans are offered to employees across the Franciscan hospitals. Compensation for St. Joseph employees is market based – regardless of job classification. We believe our wage proposal will position St. Joseph Medical Center to compete favorably for service positions in the open job market, as well as retain our valued employees. St. Joseph values the contribution of each employee and seeks to provide fair and competitive pay and benefits.

How can St. Joseph justify its actions toward the union given that the Catholic Church supports the rights of workers and unions?
St. Joseph’s core values of reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence guide our relationships with all employees regardless of whether employees are represented by unions or not, and with the unions themselves where they represent our employees. The Catholic Church advocates for workers to have an effective voice in their work. The Church does not teach that labor unions are the only way for workers to work successfully with their employers. St. Joseph values the contribution of each employee and seeks to provide fair and competitive pay and benefits to all.
