St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor will open an additional 16 beds on Tuesday, May 26, as more area doctors and their patients turn to the facility to provide care for overnight hospital stays.
“Since we opened St. Anthony in March with 48 of its 80 licensed beds, the hospital’s patient census has been at or near capacity,” said Chief Operating Officer Carole Peet. “Our plan has always been to increase the number of beds to our full licensed limit as our patient volumes increased. The need to phase in our additional beds is here and now.”
With the opening of the additional beds next week, St. Anthony Hospital will have 64 beds available for medical and surgical patients. Concurrently, the hospital will begin designating its 3rd floor for patients recovering from surgical procedures and its 4th floor exclusively for the care of medical patients. This alignment of care is designed to benefit the nursing staff, physicians, patients and their loved ones.
In July, St. Anthony Hospital plans to phase in its remaining 16 beds as it reaches its 80-bed licensed maximum. Activation of the additional beds is about a month ahead of schedule because patient volumes have exceeded projections.
During the first two months of service (March 17-May 11), the hospital staff treated 2,429 patients in the Gene and Mary Ann Walters Center for Emergency Services; performed 303 surgeries; and admitted 628 patients for stays that lasted overnight or longer.
St. Anthony Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, including a state-of-the-art outpatient cancer treatment center in the adjoining Milgard Medical Pavilion. Additionally, the hospital has become a center of learning by serving as the location of free, regular health talks that are open to the public. Learn more online at www.GigHarborhospital.org.
