St. Francis Hospital welcomes its new chief operating officer
Tony McLean steps into new role today as Federal Way Hospital’s top administrator

Tony McLean is the new chief operating officer at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, and today is his first day on the job as the top administrator at the 110-bed, acute-care facility.

“Franciscan Health System is renowned for its quality care and commitment to putting the patient first,” says McLean. “I’m thrilled to become a part of this organization, and to be able to further its mission to create healthier communities, particularly here at St. Francis Hospital.”

McLean has extensive experience in health care leadership, and most recently served as vice president of operations for Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle. At St. Francis, he succeeds Sister Anne McNamara who had served as interim chief operating officer since January. Sister Anne is a long-time member of the Franciscan Health System’s leadership team. St. Francis Hospital is part of the Franciscan Health System.

As vice president of operations at Virginia Mason, McLean was responsible for the strategic growth and operational leadership of various inpatient and outpatient services, including cancer, surgery, orthopedics, neurosciences and outpatient therapies.

McLean earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and a Master of Health Administration degree from The Ohio State University. Prior to joining Virginia Mason, he worked in the administration departments at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, and at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

As chief operating officer at St. Francis, McLean is the top executive at the full-service community hospital that has served South King County since 1987. The campus includes the hospital and the St. Francis Outpatient Center, which is home to radiation oncology; diagnostic imaging; day surgery; and physical, speech and occupational rehabilitation. He reports to Joe Wilczek, president and chief executive officer of the Franciscan Health System.

St. Francis Hospital is the leading provider of weight loss surgery in the state and is designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Its Emergency Department is also one of the busiest in the state, with more than 48,300 patient visits between July 2007 and July 2008.

In September, St. Francis opened a new Critical Care Unit and completed expansion of its Emergency Department. “I am very excited about the opportunity to support St. Francis Hospital during this pivotal time,” says McLean. “The recent addition of the Critical Care Unit and expansion of the Emergency Department are part of St. Francis’ continuing commitment to serving the needs of Federal Way residents.”

The hospital is planning to add a new wing that will house 36 additional beds for medical and surgical patients that were approved earlier this year by the Washington State Department of Health.
