Effectiveness of Weight Loss Surgery
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Statement of 2005, surgery is the only way to obtain consistent, permanent weight loss for morbidly obese patients. Operative mortality rates in the hands of a skilled surgeon are low, ranging from 0.1% to 1%, depending upon the procedure performed. Additionally, savings from reduced treatment of comorbidities can result in ‘paying off’ the upfront cost of the surgery in two years.*
