May is Stroke Month
May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Recognize the stroke symptoms and save lives! Stroke is the #4 cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. A stroke can happen anywhere; while you're driving or at work. That's why it's important to recognize the symptoms of a stroke and act FAST to prevent devastating effects. Time lost is brain lost.
Stroke Awareness Month provides an opportunity to spread the word about recognizing the signs of a stroke and reminding people how important it is to respond quickly when someone displays the warning signs.
At each of our hospitals, our Franciscan Stroke Teams are equipped and ready to care for stroke patients; however, high-risk patients will be transferred to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, designated a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. Local Emergency Medical Service (EMS) teams serve as an extension of the Franciscan Stroke Team, providing advanced notice of a 'code neuro' or possible stroke patient before they reach the hospital.
During the month of May, there are several ways you can get involved in stroke prevention.
