We make the difference when moments count
The most important thing you can do for your loved on (or yourself, if able) is to call 9-1-1 at the first sign of stroke. Your local community’s emergency response team will get you to the closest hospital to start your care. All Franciscan Emergency departments have response teams who get care begun immediately and can give clot dissolving medications to the appropriate patients as needed.

If further care is needed, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, our teams of specialists use the most advanced technology, including interventional radiology, to treat stroke and aneurysms. Our physician specialists use the most advanced technology, including interventional radiology, to treat stroke and aneurysms including endovascular procedures (minimally invasive, catheter-based technology, accessing the blood vessels from the groin or other locations).

Our goal is to stop or even reverse the effects of stroke and to provide our patients with the individualized care they need when moments count. Following stroke intervention treatment, St. Joseph Medical Center’s Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU) offers fully-monitored individualized care by a staff that specializes in stroke recovery. This unique unit is located within St. Joseph’s renowned Critical Care Unit and is designed specifically for patients with stroke and other brain, spinal cord and nervous system disorders. As patients recover, they may be transferred to the acute rehabilitation units at St. Joseph or Highline medical centers.
