Parkinson's Disese Management Program
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the brain that leads to tremors, difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination. It is characterized by shaking, stiffness, slowness of movement and eventually loss of balance. It is caused when your body stops making a chemical called dopamine.
Franciscan Neurosciences offers a comprehensive Parkinson’s Disease Management Program led by board-certified neurologists specializing in evaluating and treating patients with Parkinson’s. Treatment includes medical management combined with Parkinson’s-specific outpatient therapy.
In conjunction with your provider, Franciscan Therapy Services offers Parkinson’s patients physical, occupational and speech therapies to evaluate and treat conditions related to the disease.
- Franciscan therapists address problems with balance, coordination, fatigue, pain, gait, immobility, weakness, activities of daily living, memory, voice, speech and swallowing.
- Specially trained Parkinson’s disease therapists are certified in LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD programs at St. Joseph (Tacoma), St. Francis (Federal Way) and St. Anthony (Gig Harbor) hospitals.
- Incorporation of Tai Chi principles may also be included in an individualized treatment program.
