Filling your toolbox with skills and information
Franciscan offers a comprehensive program to empower referred patients with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes to manage daily care and stay active and healthy. All services are available at all of our locations throughout the Puget Sound. Family members are encouraged to participate in all programs.
Initial assessment
Your first step after gaining referral is meeting with a diabetes educator for initial assessment of your needs and lifestyle. Together, you’ll formulate a plan to get healthy and stay that way. Follow-up consultations are available to address any changing needs.
Training and support
All programs are available in groups and individually, depending upon location. Family members are encouraged to participate every step of the way, and become a part of your care team.
Healthy Living with Diabetes – covers all aspects daily diabetes management, including diet, medications, exercise and avoiding risks.
Carbohydrate Counting – accurate carb counting for better control of blood sugar levels.
Gestational Diabetes Education – addresses specific needs of women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy.
Injectable Treatments – instruction for using and adjusting insulin pens, vials, and syringes.
Insulin Pump Therapy – device training to get started with insulin pump, upgrade a pump and fine-tuning blood sugar control
Continuous Glucose Monitoring – training for patients using this system for enhanced blood sugar monitoring.
Support groups
Patients and loved ones can exchange experiences and encouragement from those coping with similar issues. Meetings include both presentations on specific topics and open discussion. Participation is open to all, no registration required. Call Franciscan’s Diabetes Services at 253-426-6753 to find a group near you.
Inpatient care and training
Specialized inpatient care is available at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. During your stay, a diabetes educator, in consultation with your doctor, will go over the causes of your hospitalization, and devise a plan, including ongoing training, to help you stay on track once you get home.
