Who is Epic?
Founded in 1979 and based in Verona, WI, Epic is a private company composed of clinicians, developers and process experts – people who are deeply experienced in patient care and health care technology. Epic has a proven track record for providing software that is quick to implement, easy to use and highly shareable.
Do physicians and health care organizations outside of Washington use Epic?
Yes. In fact, about one in four physicians in the U.S. will use Epic when current rollouts are complete. Additionally, Epic works with about 240 customers, including medical groups, hospitals and integrated health care organizations like Franciscan.
I've heard Epic also has software for patient registration and billing. Will we be implementing those?
Epic's software platform includes inpatient registration, enterprise scheduling for any type of visit anywhere in the organization, and billing systems for inpatient and outpatient settings. Plans call for Franciscan to also adopt this software because it will integrate systems and make it easier for us to manage patient access and billing issues.
Additionally, Epic includes a physician portal and patient portal, My Chart.
Why are we working with a partner organization for implementation? Why don't we just work with Epic directly?
Based on our discussions with Group Health and our analysis with CHI, we're confident we will save staff time and resources, reduce design-build costs and speed up implementation by working with someone that has a proven track record for implementing Epic in care settings very similar to ours. We also may work with Epic directly on part of our implementation. Additional details will be shared with you mid-November.
How does Epic stack up and compare to other EHR and software companies?
Epic has received numerous industry awards. More important still, Epic's customers hold more HIMSS Davies awards (based on excellence in the implementation and value of health information technology, specifically EHRs) than any other EHR vendor's clients. Epic also has a history of fostering collaboration among its clients, both online and in person, to improve patient care.
