Bras for the Cause Event Attracts Area Mayors, Raises Money for Mammogram Screening

Community members gathered to celebrate and enjoy the third annual “Bras for a Cause” fundraising event at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

The event featured a judged exhibition of 25 decorated bra entries submitted by community artists. A raffle, silent auction, and shopping with local vendors were also highlights of the night, and hors d'oeuvres were served from the hospital’s Cornerstone Café.

More than 150 people were in attendance and approximately $3,500 was raised to support the mammogram screening project at St. Elizabeth – a project that allows uninsured and under-insured women to receive potentially lifesaving mammograms and follow-up care.

Entry judges included:

  • St. Elizabeth Hospital President Donna Russell-Cook
  • Enumclaw Mayor Enumclaw Liz Reynolds
  • Buckley Mayor Pat Johnson
  • Black Diamond Mayor Rebecca Olness

First place was awarded to an entry titled “Mammograms ... Corset Saves Lives!” by Debra Lynne. This entry also won the “People’s Choice Award” – the only award given as voted solely by attendees.

Second place went to “Chicken Breasts” by Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, and third place went to “Spellbound” by Geneva Devine.

Speakers at the event were Donna Elzenga, the founder of Bras for the Cause in Enumclaw, and Susan Grasdahl, representing the Puget Sound Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Tanya Wilke, M.D., Franciscan Medical Clinic – Enumclaw, who specializes in women’s health, was honored for the care she provides to breast cancer patients on the plateau.

Stay tuned for information to come on next year’s event, which will likely take place at a larger venue!
