Affiliation With Regional Hospital

Franciscan and Regional Hospital have announced plans to affiliate. Regional is a 40-bed, not-for-profit Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) hospital based at Highline Medical Center’s Specialty Campus in Tukwila. Based in Burien, Highline affiliated with Franciscan last April.

The affiliation would expand Franciscan’s continuum of care and help improve management of patients who are critically ill and need a post-ICU level of care, including ongoing respiratory care.

Plans call for relocating Regional Hospital to Highline’s main campus in Burien as early as next summer, subject to approvals from regulatory agencies. It will continue operating as a non-profit, non-religious (secular) institution as it has been since it opened in 1994.

Regional has leased space from Highline at the Specialty Campus for more than 20 years. With the impending sale of that campus to Acadia Healthcare and Acadia’s planned service expansion, Regional sought to partner with an organization that would allow it to continue serving the vital needs of long-term acute care patients.

Regional will operate as a “hospital within a hospital” at Highline with its own Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Board of Directors. After it moves, Regional will continue to welcome referrals from its current referral sources.

Plans will be finalized when the definitive agreement is completed by the end of 2013 and will be implemented during the first half of 2014.
